This is a comprehensive, theoretically up to date list of the reptile and amphibian species I have observed within their natural habitats in 2012. I will try and keep it updated as I observe more species. All species found within Arkansas state limits unless noted otherwise. I closed 2011 with 98 species and subs, but with the traveling I'll be doing this year, I hope to end it with well over 100 species and subspecies (where valid).
As many of you can tell by my gallery, my biggest passion is finding and photographing reptiles and amphibians within their natural habitats. A lot of the animals I post are manipulated ("posed") for more aesthetically pleasing images, but none are harmed in any way and they are all released at the area of capture. I may post some endangered, threatened, or special concern species that have obviously been handled, but I only do so with proper permits I've been issued to work with said animals. I also shoot venomous snakes in real close proximity, something that I don't recommend unless you have experience working with them and understanding what they're capable of. I've spent a lot of years working with them and I know where I can be in relation to them while still remaining in a safe zone.
Animals preceded by an asterisk (*) are lifer species/subspecies. (Species that have been personally found for the first time this year).

Time to get a new season under way...
Well everyone, it's 2012... already. 2011 was a great year for herping. Even if I didn't reach my goal of finding and photoing 100 species/subspecies of reptiles and amphibians, I got close with 98.
2012 is promising to be another good year with a bunch of new animals, new places, and new friends. My new lenses and flash setup will be here in the next few weeks and trips are already coming together.
Early March will bring the first trip of the season with some friends to find the last couple endemic slimy salamander species that I failed to make it to last year. April we'll be focusing really hard on western diamondback rattlesnake dens in
2011 Herplist
Herps I have found in the field throughout 2011. I'll try to keep it updated as new animals are found and photoed. All entries found alive by me within Arkansas state limits unless noted otherwise...
* = lifer (An animal that I hadn't found in the wild prior to this year)
Snakes
Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix - Southern copperhead (Arkansas and Oklahoma)
Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma - Western cottonmouth
*Arizona elegans noctivaga - Arizona glossy snake (Arizona)
*Carphophis vermis - Western Worm snake (Arkansas and Oklahoma)
*Cemaphora coccinea copei - Northern scarlet snake
*Coluber constrictor priapus - Southern black racer
After a longgg winter...
...that was only long in relation to what I'm used to, and going three months without any herps, the 2011 season has officially begun. I have found a few Virginia striatula (Rough earth snakes), a sub adult Eumeces fasciatus (Five line skink), and my lifer Pseudacris fouquettei (Cajun chorus frogs) so far. We've only had a few warm days, but it has started herp activity, and I will be on a three day amphibian trip chasing some protected/endangered salamander species this weekend. Top that off with a new camera that'll be here Tuesday, I should finally have some new stuff to post!
Anyhow, herpers, have an awesome 2011 season.
I've been away as of recently...
During the past few weeks I haven't been extremely active on DA. Most of this can be blamed on work, but all of my free time has been going to herping as much as I can before the cold sets in. Once it gets a little colder, I'll be around a lot more though...
